This is because he did not believe that Jesus had come alive again even when the other disciples had told them that they witnessed it. Finally, the resurrected Lord appeared to Thomas personally, and Thomas declared his belief. Then he became "believing Thomas." Jesus Christ declared in John 20:29 that those who have not have the benefit of seeing Jesus personally, and yet still believe in Jesus, are blessed. Thomas appears to be somewhat maligned by being called doubting, when in the end, he was believing. While "seeing is believing" say many people, it is interesting to note that many in Bible times saw Jesus and his miracles, yet still did not believe.
